Here it is – the parts I thought would turn black are more of a dun-color, but I am pleased with the results. Now I want to do more. Perhaps some dancers next!

Yesterday I worked on a plaque with 2 horses on it which I will raku fire tomorrow. First I sketched the horses on a bisque-fired slab and then I used latex resist to cover my drawing. After that I painted over the whole surface with a multi-hued raku glaze; when I pulled off the stretchy latex layer, the pale bisqued clay showed through where it had been (that part will become black from the smoke when fired). Then I used a fine needle-tipped slip trailer with gold luster glaze in it, outlining the lines of my drawing and adding manes to the horses (this looks black at this stage, but hopefully will turn goldish). I can hardly wait to see how this plaque turns out!
NOTE: I got the idea and directions for this project from an excerpt of a book which I downloaded from Ceramics Art Daily (you can check out their website & sign up for a free online newsletter if you’re interested by clicking on this link: http://ceramicartsdaily.org). They have some wonderful books & videos about a variety of ceramic techniques!

I’ve been glazing lots of my pieces lately at the ceramics studio and some of my glazed pieces will probably be unloaded from the kiln by this evening or tomorrow. I’ll also have another raku-firing next Monday. It’s always exciting to see what emerges – I love this process! (I’ll undoubtedly be posting a snapshot or two of the results soon.)
Meanwhile, here’s a lovely sketch done in 1886 by Berthe Morisot (one of my favorite French Impressionists), of her daughter reading a book. And below is a link to a really good video clip about a new exhibit of portraits by Lucian Freud which recently opened in London – I wish I could pop over there and see it! I love good portraits, those which make the people seem as real as his and Morisot’s do.

Here’s an altered book I’ve been working on, which is part of a round-robin by a group of artists I belong to. Yesterday I altered the page on the right, in response to the one on the left, which was done by another artist. I think they go well together. The words showing through the cut-out windows on my page read: “Oh perfect love / Through the years / (Through the years),” “Cello,” “Oboe,” “Violin or Viola.” Poetry? Or poetic nonsense.. you be the judge.
I love doing this sort of thing!

Here’s a work in progress, a slip painted dish which hasn’t been fired yet. The colors will be different when it’s done, and I may add some more decorative lines to it.. more anon.

Yayoi Kusama – polka dots are her specialty
The 82-year-old Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is having a forthcoming solo exhibition at London’s Tate Modern, one of the most important museums in England for modern art. I had never heard of her before; I must have blinked during her “15 minutes of fame” in NYC in the 60s & 70s. She later returned to Japan where she has lived in a mental hospital for the past 35 years. However she never stopped making art and has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in her work in the last 10 years or so. There was a fascinating article about her in the Life & Arts section of the Financial Times a few weeks back; there’s even an odd parallel with our current Occupy movement. You can read (& print) a PDF copy of it by clicking on this link: Kusama article
NOTE: a slideshow of some of Kusama’s artwork can also be viewed online by clicking on this link:

Here’s a snapshot of my latest Art Tag piece, which I’m calling Patterns III: Some Patterns Need to be Broken. It’s a mixed media piece using my ceramic quilt mounted on an old recycled wooden tray. (To see it larger, click on the image.)

I was disappointed to find that my ceramic quilt had cracked when it was fired. However I am now determined to use it in a mixed media piece for the Art Tag series on Patterns - when that’s done I will post a photo here. Stay tuned!

I finished glazing the bisque-fired ceramic “quilt” yesterday; now it’s waiting to be high-fired. The colors will all be different after that, as will the surface textures! Many hours of work went into the decoration of this piece; I hope it turns out well.
I have decided that it will be the 3rd in my series about Patterns, so I’ll be showing it to the Art Tag group when we have our meeting in SF this coming Sunday. No time to do anything over – whatever it is, that’s what it will be .

The left page of the altered book shown above is my doing. It’s one of the books my women’s art group is currently passing around in a round-robin project. Several of the words on that page were compounds beginning with fire.
